Soldier's relatives throw their weight behind mansion appeal
THE aunt and mother of a soldier recently back from Afghanistan have organised a charity dinner dance to raise money for the Golden Grove Mansion Appeal.
Caroline Bevan said she and her sister Lorraine Richards were thrilled to see their loved one, Christopher Richards, 20, back home.
But the duo want to do their bit for returning Welsh soldiers by supporting the fundraising campaign for a purpose-built convalescent home near Llandeilo to house wounded troops.
"We wanted to give something back," said Mrs Bevan, of Jersey Marine.
Sapper Richards, whose family live in Skewen, featured in a Sunday Times article in February when, while sitting in a muddy ditch, an enemy grenade bounced off his thigh before exploding.
He dived for cover and fortunately escaped unhurt, despite a piece of shrapnel puncturing his weapon's magazine.
He said at the time: "We then came under fire immediately after, so I didn't have much time to think about it."
The dinner dance takes place at Manor Park Country House, Clydach, on November 6, from 7.30pm to 1am.
